Press Release: Four Urban Planners Create Virtual Photography Exhibition to Tell Stories of the Built Environment

MAY 27, 2021 - The 2021 Summer Exhibition 1.0 (June 12 to June 27, 2021) is a new initiative by four urban planners to tell stories of the built environment and invite viewers to build a deeper connection with their surroundings. Three of the exhibitors, Tobin Stuff, Shravanthi Kanekal, and Yeana Kwagh, are alumni from the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design Master of City Planning program. Allison Lau is a current candidate in the program.

The purpose of the 2021 Summer Exhibition is to feature photographic works that go beyond a singular image. The exhibits span a spectrum of techniques that transform photos into a series of story-telling journals and multi-layered visuals. The exhibits show that a photo can do more than simply be a nice visual; it can be one of the main components to connect with the stories and aspects of communities that can only be told through photos.

Tobin Stuff describes the 2021 Summer Exhibition as an opportunity for viewers, especially fellow urban planners, to become inspired to go out and explore their surroundings. He says “the barrier to capturing stories of the built environment is not camera equipment; it’s the lack of time devoted to observing spaces to see, listen to, and feel the stories that make spaces unique. This exhibition offers viewers a window into how photos can tell these stories.”

The virtual 2021 Summer Exhibition will be held from Saturday, June 12 to Sunday, June 27 on 7521 Photography’s website. A virtual opening of the exhibition will be on the evening of June 12. A preview web page to the 2021 Summer Exhibition can be found here. Viewers can sign-up to receive updates on the exhibition and other programming that will be part of the exhibition over the two-week period.
